Chevron join forces to pioneer a low-carbon rubber sheet production
Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd., has partnered with the Energy Systems Research Institute at Prince of Songkla University (PSU), to continue the “Lower Carbon Biogas Rubber Project.” The project aims to establish a model for a low-carbon emissions rubber cooperative in Songkhla province. Recently, Chatit Huayhongtong, president of Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd., presented a budget of 3,000,000 baht to Prof.
Mr. Sumate Chaiprapat, director of PSU’s Energy Systems Research Institute. This financial support will be utilized to develop the first low-carbon emissions rubber cooperative at the Yung Thong Rubber Fund Cooperative, Bang Klam district, Songkhla province. The project’s goal is to promote environmental sustainability and enhance the long-term resilience of community enterprises in the province.
The project will conduct an assessment and create a plan for reducing carbon emissions in rubber sheet production. It will incorporate technologies for co-producing biogas, implementing high-efficiency smokehouses, and utilizing solar energy. The project will also evaluate the possibility of establishing a carbon credit system for the cooperative. Furthermore, it aims to share knowledge about energy efficiency and sustainable environmental management with cooperative members and establish a learning center to disseminate this knowledge to rubber plantation funds, community enterprises, schools, and interested individuals in the future.
For over six decades, Chevron has remained committed to being a preferred partner of the Thai society and the communities where it operates. The company has actively engaged in various initiatives aimed at driving economic development, fostering social progress, and improving the overall quality of life. Since 2015, Chevron has supported PSU’s Energy Systems Research Institute with a total budget exceeding 10 million baht. This support is directed at reducing environmental impact and enhancing the sustainability of
rubber sheet production. Under this program, cooperatives in Songkhla province have achieved a reduction in carbon emissions by up to 425 tons per year, or approximately 31% of their previous levels. This initiative serves as a model for transferring knowledge to other cooperatives in the province.
