SOME 37th : Connect ASEAN Smart Power Grid for Strenght.
24-6-2018–Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary unveiled during The 37th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Energy that Thailand propose Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand or EGAT to be ASEAN’s back bone connecting ASEAN Smart Power Grid by developing power transmission line from 115 KV to 500 KV to promote power trading and efficiency renewable energy sustainability among 10 ASEAN countries.
Thailand will make agreement on Lao-Thai-Malaysia pilot project of power purchasing through transmission line through Thailand’s after Thailand made more hydro power purchase from Lao PRD from 100 MW/year to 300 MW/ year, in order for Thailand to open the possibility to pass the power to Malaysia to purchase.
Mr.Kulit Sombatsiri Ministry of Energy permanent secretary unveiled that today (24 June 2019) Dr. Siri Jirapongphan, Minister of Energy has presided over the opening ceremony of The 37th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Energy and its associated meetings held between 24 – 28 June 2019 in Bangkok at Anantara Siam Hotel.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy of Thailand, as the Chairman of this meeting, said that Thailand believes this meeting will help promote and drive ASEAN to achieve the 10-year ASEAN Energy Action Plan (2015 – 2025), which will expand ASEAN energy connectivity and trade in order to create energy stability and sustainability in the region, which requires concrete effort among member states.
The 37th SOME meeting will discuss important regional policy issues that must be moved forward, including the priority deliverables that are important to Thailand and ASEAN and results in concrete action in 2019, which are electricity, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and natural gas.
“The meeting result will be focusing on ASEAN Action Plan for Energy Cooperation.As Thailand is the most suitable geographical location for ASEAN connectivity, then EGAT will be proposed to be SADDAm’s back bone to develop ASEAN transmission line linkage through Digital Smart Grid with the expansion of the transmission line from 115 KV to 500 KV, in order to have enough capacity for the trasition of renewable electricity trade among ASEAN countries in the future.Aiming to start by Lao-Thai-Malaysia hydro-power purchasing and look forward to continue power purchasing between ASEAN’s East-West or Myanmar-Thailand-Lao, including others zone, base on the strength of renewable power production of each country”said Energy Ministry’s permanent Secretary.
“ASEAN has been very successful in driving activities under the Energy Conservation Cooperation.SOME The 37th will discuss to set new target of ASEAN renewable energy consumption from existing 12.4% performance to 23% and increase the energy efficiency from 20% to 30% by the year 2030
This year for energy sector, Thailand announces the theme of “Advancing Energy Transition through Partnership and Innovation” which is focusing on building a close cooperation network and the development of technology and iinnovation.
The close cooperation network and development is winning for ASEAN region can get through the period of energy transition from fossil fuels to clean energy future, which is in line with the main theme of ASEAN of “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”.
The result of the 37th SOME meeting that provides important regional policy issues Including guidelines for the development of energy cooperation under the ASEAN framework will be reported to the ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) this 2-3 September 2019 in Bangkok.
