Thailand might decide joining CPTPP after election.
24-12-2018—Today Mrs.Oramon Department of Trade Negotiation Department (DTN) General Director disclosed that Thailand might decidejoining CP TPP afterelection. Now DTN is following up the progress of the enforcing agreement of CPTPP and its coverage.
Currently there are 7 of 11 member countries committed to be member of CPTPP, comprised of Mexico, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and Vietnam that will make the enforcement of CPTPP agreement effective on 30 December 2019.Members of
CPTPP was set to join The First Minister Level of CPTPP after the enforcement begin on January 2019 in Japan which was expected to have the agenda to consider the mechanism to accept CPTPP new member. The detail of the result will be helpful for Thailand to consider to join CPTPP.
Mrs Oramon said currently DTN in cooperate with Bolliger & Company (Thailand) organizing the seminar about “Thailand’s Benefit Impact and Readiness to join CPTPP”. Bolliger & Company (Thailand) was assigned by DTN to study about Thailand’s joining CPTPP and the company was committed to report the result to DTN by February 2019 .DTN will gather the company’s study result and the opinion from field research and from the meeting with the related sectors including the mechanism CPTPP to accept new member.
The gathered information related to CPTPP was expected to be proposed to policy level as the factor to consider to join CPTPP’s membership in the 2nd quarter of 2019 after the election.
Mrs Oramon added that Bolliger & Company (Thailand) had made the basic presentation that if Thailand join CPTPP will make Thai products able to export more to CPTPP. The products that will be benefit from export to Japan are such as vegetable oil, processing food, honey, red bean, fiber board.
Thai products that will be benefit from export to Canada are such as processing chicken, seasoning products, processing food, rubber tires , wheel and components, refrigerator, eyeglass lens.
Thai products that will benefit from export to Mexico are such as rubber tires, pump, fuel,
lubricant, automobile and parts.
Thai products that will benefit from export to Chile are such as rice, rubber tires, gloves,
motorcycles.
Thai products that will benefit from export to Peru are such as pineapple, gloves, radio receiver, monitor., etc.
Moreover, there are additional suggestion to increase the potential of Thailand’s business operators by supporting them to create value adding, reduce the unnecessary cost, propose government agency to promote brand building, support more product’s research and development, including setting up the fund to support the operator investing in research and development., etc.
CP TPP is the free trade agreement widely covering in opening trading market, service trading, investment, E- commerce, intellectual property, competition policy, businessman temporary relocation, government procurement, labor, and environment. Member of CPTPP comprised of 11 countries; Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Japan, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. The population of 11 countries CPTPP targeting is 500 million people or 6.7% of world population .Thailand trade with CPTPP’s 11 countries worth 134.6 billion US dollars in total of about 30% of Thailand trading with all over The World.
